School-based Education Program
The focus of the Personal Safety Education Program is to teach safety skills to children in grades K-12. The curriculum meets the Tennessee state standards for classroom instruction and has been approved by the Knox County schools.
Topics taught in elementary grades under the Safe@Last program include basic safety skills focusing on safe and unsafe touches, safe and unsafe secrets, Internet safety, as well as identifying trusted adults. Topics taught in the middle schools using the Be, Promoting Healthy Relationships program include sexual harassment, healthy versus unhealthy relationships, and Internet safety. In the high schools, presentations focus on these themes, as well as sexual assault prevention.
Evaluations indicate that students who participate in these programs learn important safety concepts and problem-solving skills.
